BIG DATA: The New Buzzword For Businesses

Mark Andrew Shaver, CIO and VP Operational Excellence, Joy Global Inc
Overcoming challenges to make job easier
The buzz on Big Data continues at every CIO forum, seminar, and most publications. Retail leverages Big Data to provide trends, select marketing channels, product distribution, and price. They can invest millions in “Big Data” storage and speed functionality. Those of us in heavy manufacturing are looking for data to understand “How are we Doing Today?” so we can influence the outcome of our product that can have up to a 6 month build cycle. We leverage data to provide information that gives direction, and leads to results. The Joy Global Direct Service Model continues with monitoring of our equipment
in some of the most remote areas of the world. The availability of lower cost of entry technology for data collaboration, remote monitoring, and shop floor production is still a barrier.
